Instrumentation & Control Engineering

It is a unique combination of both, Instrumentation and control engineering. It is one of the derivatives of Instrumentation engineering, apart from Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering. The course covers the build, design, and management of systems that are used in a range of modern industrial settings, and is related to mechatronics and robotic engineering.  Instrumentation Engineers are responsible for the design, construction, and maintenance of the entire instrumentation systems of any industrial undertaking. An instrumentation engineer makes sure that the type of instruments needed for ensuring better quality and efficiency of the end product is genuine and up to the mark.

Instrumentation Engineers are supposed to design the actuators, positioning devices and robots for industrial automation.

Instrumentation and control engineers monitor measure and control physical quantities like temperature, pressure, and flow in an automated industrial environment.



B.Tech/B.E: One must pass 10+2 or equivalent in Science branch (PCM/B). Top private universities look for at least 60% average in PCM + English. To get into an IIT or top-ranked NIT, JEE and JEE Advanced score is evaluated. Other government institutes and lower ranked NIT assess JEE marks. The course is generally of 4 years with 8 semesters. There are a lot of colleges, especially in northern India, who offer bachelor degree for this course.

M.Tech/M.E: One must complete B.Tech or B.E to pursue Masters in this course. The course is generally 2 years. GATE scores are evaluated by top institutes for the admission. One can pursue a master’s degree in production and Industrial Engineering after completing bachelors as a mechanical, civil or automobile student


Ph.D.: Another 2 years course after your masters will earn you a doctorate in the field. Of course, completion of master’s is necessary before you opt for Ph.D. else there are institutes like IITs and NITs who offer integrated courses for masters and doctorate.



Heavy industries work: They are required by the Heavy industries such as Thermal Power Stations, Steel Plants, Refineries, and Cement and Fertilizer Plants calculate and find the pressure, flow and weight of the product. Highly trained individuals are given these chances as any tiny mistake can cause huge damage to the company or surroundings.

Alternate choices: Any trained individual can get into other career options in the industries like purchasing, sales, marketing, finance, HR, IT or general because these places need a lot of expertise to determine if the equipment or the candidate is useful for the company or not.

There are a lot of responsibilities for an I&C engineer. They have a number of tasks to be performed and take care of the entire system of the industry. They need to be accurate in their tasks and make sure that the work is done in a safe and profitable way. Tasks and responsibilities, which are common to instrumentation engineers, may include:

•    They are supposed to Manage operations.

•    They have to Work collaboratively with design engineers, operation engineers,                      purchasers and other  internal staff for the safe running of the plant.

•    They need to Contact clients, suppliers, contractors, and relevant authorities in order to        maintain the profits  and quality of materials.

•    They need to have Project management within cost and time constrained environments.

•    They should be good at Troubleshooting and problem-solving.

•    They should Understand and ensure compliance with the health and safety regulations        and quality  standards.

•    They have to Provide advice and consultancy support to the juniors for their better               understanding.

•    They have to purchase equipment for the company by seeing what is in the best favor          of the company.

After the completion of this course one can expect recruitment by industrial plants, electricity generating organizations, big warehouses, factories and industrial sector like manufacturing, process industries, chemical, food & beverages, Oil Gas, Transport, machine tools, etc. the demand for I&C engineers is very high in Gulf countries and European countries due to large oil and gas market.
